Modular vehicle gates for Rotherfield Park in Hampshire

The brief was to design an anti-vehicle barrier-gate that will give the estate a unique identity. It had to be easy to manufacture locally, with a budget of £800 per gate, including lock and posts.

Inspired by the family crest, a curved bottom chord becomes an arch (when paired) with each panel width and height decreasing towards the free end. The webs are also curved and form vertical ‘gothic’ arches of changing silhouette.

To achieve the uniqueness and the desired understated elegance this gate is a structure of connected elements formed with curved webs and bottom cord in a triangulated geometry. The webs and bottom chord are made of 10mm-thick flat bar 50mm wide, and the top chord and hanging style are 90 x 50mm x 3mm hollow section. The hinge posts are 120mm square hollow sections and the locking posts are 90mm square hollow sections.

The truss is very simply assembled using a floor based jig to cold bend the flat bar. It takes one operative four hours to cut, curve, weld and clean one truss 5m long. The truss element is hot-dipped galvanised in one piece with very little distortion. Not using much hollow section simplifies welding and speeds up fabrication.

The lock (provided by the client) is invisibly located, placed in the hollow section at the truss end. The gusset plate in the truss is for the gate location / identification number for the estate and for visitors.
