New build studio for a small architect's practice

The site is in the curtilage of a grade 2 listed cottage. It had existing permission for a car barn and approval was approved for an office within the same volume.

The brief was for a small robust studio with all the requirements of a modern office but with a more original approach. The workspace has a single large desk served by a butler’s kitchen, wc with shower for cyclists and a walk-in store. A walnut cut-string stair leads up to the meeting space.

To achieve the £60k budget, a simple 140mm softwood stud frame with OSB bracing was used with a glulam beam to support the mezzanine floor and glass balustrading. The frame was super insulated then clad in pine Thermowood. This was stained black to complement the Tudor cottage frame and roofed in slate with a lead roll ridge. The doors and windows were fabricated in Accoya timber.
