A safe and secure cycle hub to promote and inspire cycling and the use of public transport in the West Midlands

The aim of the project was to develop a prototype design that would promote and increase the use of bicycles and the wider public transportation network in West Midlands whilst also providing a legacy of safe, convenient and easy to use bicycle facilities for all members of the community.

The prototype has been constructed within the car park of Selly Oak Railway Station and is the first in a series of Secure Cycle Hubs to be constructed in the West Midlands.

Reflecting the world-class facility it provides, the completed structure is aesthetically striking, featuring a curving roof, galvanised steel supports, glass, timber and perforated cladding complete with branded signage and vinyl graphics.

The hub is a secure, weather protected facility offering 20-30 cycle parking spaces. The structure utilises a combination of Sheffield bicycle stands and two-tier parking racks to optimise space. For maximum safety the hub is equipped with CCTV coverage, lighting and 24-hour smart card access for members of the scheme.

The design has been rationalised to enable the structure to be fabricated from a series of repetitive components; manufactured in a variety of materials and finishes; adapted to suit sloping sites; expanded to increase bicycle capacity and to require minimal maintenance.
