Bird hide complex located on a new sea defence set between two lagoons in the middle of the salt marsh on the coast in North Norfolk
The complex is made up of a collection of smaller structures, meant to evoke a series of wings, up-turned boats or a twist of driftwood. This provides a great variety of viewing experiences from the close-up to spectacular panoramic views over the lagoons.
The hides are constructed with a galvanised steel frame, ply carcassing panels and a Siberian Larch rainscreen. Panelised construction was adopted as the poor access route to the site precluded the use of full modular units.
There are 31m of ramps facilitating access for the disabled and the detailing of the landscape elements in reinforced concrete reflects the site's military archaeology as a WWII firing range.
The sea defence contract ran concurrently with the hide contract and both had to fit into a narrow build window between bird breeding seasons.
