Fifteen-metre swimming pool housed in a seventeenth century stable block in County Cork, Ireland
As part of the refurbishments of a country house in Ireland, MSA architects were commissioned to convert a series of seventeenth century outbuildings into a leisure suite including a fifteen metre indoor swimming pool.
The pool itself fills a former stable building, its concrete tank structure acting to stabilise the historic walls. Access is provided by a glazed link facing the stable yard to the south. To the north, horizontal slit windows frame views of the grounds towards a distant range of mountains.
From the courtyard, the pool is glimpsed through the glazed wall and the openings in the rough stone wall behind. A reflecting pool flanks the opposite wall of the courtyard, subtly mirroring the indoor pool, an effect enhanced by a line of stepping stones across the courtyard’s centre.
