Rear View Extension
Terence McCaw Download Original
Two-storey rear house extension with an open plan kitchen/dining area on the ground floor and a bedroom above
The configuration of the kitchen, scullery, pantry, back yard and lean-to conservatory was a menagerie of typical mid- 20th Century house design. All these accruements at the rear of the house were demolished and a new open plan kitchen/dining area has been constructed on the south facing side of the property with a direct interaction with the existing garden. The extension also provides a fourth bedroom at first floor level with an en-suite facility.
A typical suburban house has been transformed by an extension which brings the living accommodation into the 21st Century. The outmoded cellular layout of the kitchen and rear utility spaces has been replaced with an open plan extension in a largely glazed pavilion. These interventions of modernity not only engage with the external landscaping but provide a dialogue with the design of an earlier era.
