Four bedroom Victorian terrace house, located within a conservation area in Islington, reconfigured to create a contemporary family home comprised of striking and unexpected spaces and features
The exciting interplay between the period nature of the house and new contemporary living spaces is reinforced through the detailing of individual elements, including a new cantilevered metal staircase in contrast with the Victorian wooden banisters below.
The CAD CAM laser cut and folded ‘segments’ of the new stair form ribs that reference the rhythm of the original newel and banisters. The natural sandblasted and waxed steel finish is naturally lit by a large frameless rooflight and with wall lights casting ever changing shadows. Like the period stair the form of the new stair is expressive of its fabrication process and function.
The overall result is a wonderful combination of contemporary and original spaces, with an unexpected yet appropriate marriage of period and modern features including the elegant relationship of new and old stairs.
