Refurbishment of a house to create an art gallery space
The narrow west London house was last refurbished in the 1990s and was in need of reorganisation to reflect the current owner’s lifestyle as a collector of design objects.
To create several gallery type spaces within the reception floors to present a changing collection the staircase was repositioned to the centre of the footprint. The front service and back private rooms were created off this spine, with free flowing circulation between them.
A new layer was added with evidence of previous refurbishments still visible. Old paint meets new plaster, marble with herringbone parquet, old terrazzo with red oxide painted steel. History was not scrubbed out, but allowed to coexist with the new additions, including a new conservatory at the ground level. The bedroom on the top floor has an angled ceiling that reflects the area created above for the roof garden.
