A competition-winning temporary pavilion for the Welsh National Eisteddfod to inspire the public, host events and exhibit artworks
'A Welsh Landscape' was winner of Design Circle/RSAW’s Eisteddfod Architecture Pavilion Competition. The winning design had to offer a vision of Welsh Architecture to inspire the public during the week-long National Eisteddfod festival.
The Pavilion represents a series of moments reflecting aspects of the Welsh landscape. Vertical trees, a grid of simply-fixed fence posts, provide the structure for the pavilion. A path cut into the trees leads to a glowing Correx vessel, a large-scale ‘cwtch’ for events. A timber fence defines the route through the pavilion and provides exhibition space. A reclaimed corrugated metal back-of-house represents the manmade object within the landscape. The Eisteddfod bard’s chair, lit from above, glistens in polished gold at the heart of the pavilion.
The pavilion was erected in three weeks from cost effective, readily available materials. Simple fixings make it easy to erect, collapse and store in a 3m container for future reuse.
