Park Walk Primary School is a three storey Victorian Grade II Listed building in Chelsea
The brief was to address the lack of disabled access within the school and provide an integrated graphical and spatial school identity, which would be fun and also provide educational benefit.
The Listed status meant the design solution had to be an internal one that involved the removal of an existing pre-cast staircase to form a three-storey lift shaft and lobby space.
‘Wine Gum’ coloured translucent reinforced resin bridges form new lift lobbies and allow natural light to percolate down from a skylight. A mural, depicting ‘life size’ animals, drawn in outline on a dichroic-fleck paint background wrap the walls.
Off the main corridors, routed mono-colour animal graphic panels frame the lobby entrances and on the back wall of the lift shaft nocturnal animals can be seen through the fully glazed rear wall of the lift car.
