Library that provides 750 undergraduate reader places and space for 350,000 volumes in a state-of-the-art building finished with exposed boardmarked concrete and granite
The building maintains the grid of Trinity College and physically links with the existing Berkeley and Lecky libraries - all three are connected under podium level and the Berkeley has been retained as the main entrance to the whole complex.
The three sculptural blocks that make up the library are set on a podium that runs north-south across the site. Two longer blocks are connected by a glazed atrium, the taller is stone-clad and dedicated to book storage while the lower block, which is more dynamically shaped in stone and glass, contains reading rooms with views over College Park. The third block is for a Book Conservation Laboratory.
The arrangement of the buildings establishes two urban spaces at podium level, one against the rear of the Berkeley, open at the corners in the Trinity manner, with steps from the park and library square, the other between the Ussher Library and the street, which will serve as a public and tourist access to the College.
