Passivhaus-certified retrofit of a community centre in Islington
The retrofit has reduced the community centre's energy consumption by over 90 per cent with 10 per cent of the running costs. Once the energy demand was reduced, renewable technologies became more significant as a proportion of total energy consumption, enabling the centre to be almost self-sufficient in energy.
The refurbishment improves the efficiency of the existing fabric and increases useable space within the original building’s footprint. Improved energy use and CO2 emissions have been achieved by ensuring draught free construction with the building’s solid brick walls, floors and roof being wrapped in external insulation, installing a heat recovery ventilation system and replacing allwindows with Passivhaus certified, triple glazed windows.
Onsite energy generation is provided by 1162 of photovoltaics, hot water by 3m2 of solar thermal, and heat demand is provided by a ground source heat pump. A rainwater harvesting tank provides water for garden irrigation and toilets, and two native wild flower meadow roofs promote biodiversity and reduce rainwater runoff.
