Refurbishment and extension to a Carnegie library building and improvements to the surrounding landscape within a Conservation Area
The original Carnegie library completed in 1912 has been retained and renovated, while post-1912 extensions have been demolished and replaced with a new extension.
This addition has a fully glazed north elevation that reorientates the building towards the Green creating a strong presence for the entrance of the library. A predominantly stone elevation to the south allows the principal elevation of the original building to dominate and screens traffic noise and solar gain from the interior.
The original building and extension are linked by a two storey top-lit atrium that provides natural light into the centre of the building. Internally the library has both traditional bookstacks and state of the art facilities and includes a cafe and a children's library.
The layout of the green includes new paths and benches, a new stone terrace to the library and café, accessible parking facilities, cycle racks, external lighting, a children’s area and a walk through fountain.
The library is heated and cooled by a ground source heating and cooling system and the exposed concrete superstructure in the extension is used to moderate temperatures. The project achieved a BREEAM excellent rating.
