Georgian House Extension, West End, Newcastle

The brief was to upgrade and extend the living accommodation of a five storey Georgian house in the West End of Newcastle Upon Tyne. Aside from refreshing the envelope and some internal alterations, the key component of the brief was a contemporary addition to the property in a lowered, small, rear yard, accessed via a narrow shared alleyway. The client wanted a small, bright and outward-looking space for sitting, reading and relaxing, that would also provide a quality rear entrance when arriving home by bicycle. The scheme also had to provide storage for the bicycles and for bins.

A 1960s single glazed extension to the rear of the property was stripped away and replaced with a single storey glazed box, elevated from yard level alongside a raised patio, with outdoor storage beneath. The chosen palette of materials combine the house’s original materials of painted timber, Northumbrian stone, brick and lead with contemporary aluminium and large expanses of glass.
