Bateman's Row has a tough street presence sympathetic to the Shoreditch townscape
Nick Kane Download Original
Architects' office, gallery, penthouse and residential flats in the Shoreditch area of London
The building has a staggered form with a top floor inset behind a parapet. This white pavilion with a projecting roof cheekily mirrors the formally similar fire escape on the adjacent building.
The thick foundations, in the style of a medieval castle, carry their solidness on to thick walls and windows. These foundations are comprised of a plinth of dark engineering brick, and the building gradually gains more glazing through the upper storeys culminating in a the fully glazed third floor.
The project's experimental quality comes from its play with windows and glass walls. There are flush windows, recessed windows, corner glazing, a glass wall that disappears and window grilles that look like balustrades.
The large split-level penthouse is intended as a residence for the company's founding directors Patrick Theis and Soraya Khan.
