Building to house two departments, ORC (Optoelectronics Research Centre) and ECS (the School of Electronics and Computer Science), each with its own clean rooms, laboratories and academic offices
The four storey concrete framed building provides state-of-the-art, flexible, interdisciplinary space designed specifically to meet the long term needs of the school.
The main entrance opens into a light and spacious glazed atrium with a concrete feature staircase which connects to a new external square providing south facing outdoor space.
The clean rooms and laboratories that occupy the ground and first floors, are characterized by the Peano-Gosper fractal etched on the glass panels that enclose the building.
The office and communications space on the upper floors is visually separated by the subtly coloured cladding.
The building replaces a previous facility on the same site which was destroyed by fire in October 2005.
