Two separate but interlinked buildings, comprising a 185-bedroom hotel and an office block
The site had long been disused as an empty space, a petrol station and derelict warehouse. The architect intended the project to generate an economic impact in the formerly neglected south end of Union street.
The bulk of the seven storey hotel and six storey office does not seem imposing from street level, as the bulk is reduced by a projecting cornice which simultaneously hides the fifth storey and relates the two buildings.
The building's ground floor is composed of Aberdonian granite, further up it expands into a less traditional design: stone gives way to curtain walling with a glazing structure for the office and overlapping panels for the hotel. The uppermost levels seem the most contempoary, with zinc and glass clad walls and bay windows distinctively angled.
The glazed design of the façade intends to bring a high level of natural day-light into the building, and this is complemented by south-facing sun terraces accessed via folding glass walls. The area around the front entrance has also been landscaped and planted to form a public realm.
