The Bridge of Discovery provides a positive distraction en route to the gorge and museum
Pre-fabricated timber bridge acting as a gateway to Cragwells Crags Museum
Creswell Crags is a stunning gorge cut deep into the Derbyshire magnesium limestone bedrock. Caves within the cliffs that line the gorge have provided important archaeological discoveries including cave art from 13,000 years ago.
OMI Architects recently completed a new museum adjacent to the gorge. The museum is separated from the site by a stream running through dense woodland - habitat for a broad range of protected flora and fauna. The Bridge of Discovery acts as a prelude to the Crags, inviting visitors to stop and orientate themselves whilst gaining glimpses of riverbank life.
The structure is a repeating assembly of horizontal and vertical standard-sized timber sections that interlock to create a homogonous form. Platforms and viewing slits in the deck and sides provide modulation and variety.
