The glazed North front, taking a lead from adjoining tenemants

Contemporary insertion in the conservation area of Glasgow central. The modern extension to St Aloysius College provides additional educational and recreational facilities
Adjacent to the Mackintosh School of Art, the junior school is a similar scale to the neighbouring buildings, but has a contemporary language with a break-up that sympathises with the vertical emphasis of the tenement. The organisation came from the clients desire for a light and airy yet traditional teaching environment.
The five-storey south elevation, was designed to maximise air and light into the classes, but layered to give shade and privacy using glazing with integrated blinds and providing user control through motorised louvers.
The school is organised vertically. Classrooms are raised above the ground floor to maximise security and privacy, and are organised around a triple-height central lightwell which creates a dynamic orientation and play space for the pupils.
