The big sweep, is a private residence in East Dulwich.

Our client Catharina Choi, is a professional Chef and wanted a kitchen extension which would also allow her to have a beautiful studio space for working on new recipes and also filming for her cooking channel. As a typical Victorian terrace the site is quite tight and Catharina wanted to maximise the Kitchen and studio space, and the maximise also the light. The existing site had a rear shed which stretched along the perimeter to the full length of the site which provided precedent and existing footprint for the big sweeping curve of the rear extension to unite the two geometries of the space. The extension was built from the existing reclaimed bricks which were recycled from the site through the openings created to extend the house and the roof structure is in light weight timber. The house has received a full thermal upgrade, including new double glazed windows throughout, full insulation to all perimeter walls and facades, a new heat pump and photovoltaics on the roof so that it is fully gas free and has vastly reduced the operational costs of the existing house. The spaces are light and bright and perfect for Catharina's work.
