A photography studio and gallery space for an antique dealer based on the Fylde Coast. The project involves the partial demolition and extension of an existing outbuilding to provide additional space and light.
Using the established palette of red Accrington brick, clay tiles and contrasting stonework, the building reflects the character of the main house and its surroundings. It is, however, undoubtedly contemporary in its detailing and appearance. The hipped roof creates a lofty interior, with walls and ceilings lined in birch plywood to create a unified, calm space. A north facing rooflight delivers soft natural light directly into the centre of the studio, while two generously proportioned windows provide connections to the house and garden. Wherever possible materials from the original 1920s outbuilding have been re-purposed. Brickwork was salvaged to rebuild the walls, and pine boards, which had previously formed the roof sarking, were carefully stripped and used to clad the studio doors. Other materials were sourced from local suppliers, including the ‘St Annes Red’ brickwork and precast stonework which came from a local Lancashire workshop. The use of timber frame construction and linings also improve the project’s environmental impact, with joinery elements being meticulously executed by a team of local craftsmen which included the client’s furniture restorer.
