A bespoke garden studio building for fashion designer Teija (Teija Studio) in a truly beautiful moorland location in St Breward on Bodmin Moor in Cornwall.

The plot was a private and somewhat secluded plot. Despite this it commands stunning moorland views. A vital part of this brief so as to avoid the somewhat conservative planning system in Cornwall and to make this building conform with permitted development rights which it does. Despite the beautiful location there were no area designations that restricted this. Unbelievable really. The character here is ‘Raw’ and ‘Real’ The weather is Tumultuous. Extreme sun or extreme rain and wind. Typical of Cornwall and Moorland locations. Teija wanted a unique space to be able to work from when not in London. The brief was to create a serene and natural environment that is both contemplative and inspiring. To create a working space that absorbs where it is and as a result echoes where it is. Teija wanted the building to be a modest intervention that is at home. The character is wide open views of rolling moorland hills scattered with sharp rocky outcrops. ‘Carns' in Cornish. It had to be energy efficient and low energy. The environment local and wider was a strong driver in what this building should be. It had to use natural materials and as a result a natural colour palette of colours came with that. This was to characterise the exterior finish so that it melded with its context and this was also to be extended to the interior. To be successful the interior and exterior would be of the same voice as influenced by the surroundings. The result someho
chieves this. An architectural ‘Carn’ nestled on a slope on Bodmin Moor forming an inspiring space for a creative fashion designer.
