A commercial office fit-out in Leeds

The site for the project is a portion of a former belt factory that now houses several media and digital companies in open plan layout.

Rather than a typical office fit out, the approach was to focus on the insertion of a single architectural element to provide strong visual and spatial definition to the space.

The resulting oval-planned meeting room draws upon a history of centrally planned buildings including Bramante’s Tempietto in Rome, and the Melnikov House in Moscow. Closer to home, the plan of the meeting room has a clear similarity to that of the iconic Leeds Corn Exchange, all be it at a vastly different scale.

The meeting room is constructed from softwood, OSB and polycarbonate. Externally a thick coat of off-white paint serves to monumentalise the form, although an unpainted portion at the base reveals its simple materiality. Internally this relationship is flipped so that the ceiling and upper portion of walls are unpainted. A sisal carpet gives the interior an unexpectedly domestic character, and the thick walls give a strong sense of solidity and enclosure.

A series of windows can be opened on to informal work spaces that are held between the curved form of the meeting room and the red brick walls of the belt factory. These spaces have something of an urban character, like small market squares clustered around civic or religious buildings.
