A new-build glazed extension and balcony space with internal kitchen refurbishment and external landscaping

The project was for a private client in Reigate, Surrey whose brief was simple: to create a nice space for them to enjoy their tea and retirement.

Initial ideas were for a simple and traditional pitched roof and bi-fold door system.

The practice aimed to challenge that convention by developing a scheme that maximised useable space in order to enjoy the beautiful garden.

The pitched roof soon became a balcony space and the bi-fold doors became an elegant sliding door system with 18mm frames.

The palette and construction of materials were chosen and built to blend the external and internal spaces together.

After several conversations with the local authority it was agreed that a privacy screen was integrated to avoid overlooking issues. The design fuses this into the architecture creating an open corner at ground floor whilst retaining a sense of balance through a ribbon of aluminium panelling.
