A nursery in the Eltham Green Conservation Area in South East London

The nursery's new 'Sunshine' room is sited on the existing building's unused side yard and acts as an important full stop to the existing streetscape.

Surrounded by much larger buildings the new nursery aims to shout, a bit like one of its’ inhabitants.

Conceived as a series of interlocking shapes the sunken London brick extension with its barrel vaulted green roof sensitively connects to the original building via a frameless glass link.

By maintaining the valuable outdoor amenity area, the design allows the children of all ages to come together in the new softscape sensory garden.

Groups filter from the new extension, up from the basement or down from the baby area in the original building to congregate in the new amphitheatre.

The interior acts as a canvas for the kids work and play, finishes have been kept simple, defining the interior elements with texture and accent colours. The exposed curved roof structure with walls separated from ceilings and floors by deep shadow gaps takes reference from childlike drawings of buildings.
