Fit out of new shell in large multi-use development for a new 120 place nursery

The Great West Quarter, in Brentford, West London, is a major new mixed use development and community facilities have been struggling to keep up with its pace.

Cybertots is a local children’s nursery, who saw an opportunity created by a large ground floor space in one of the apartment blocks.

The developer provided the shell and the architects were commissioned by the nursery to design a fit-out.

The budget was extremely tight, with the result that much of the work was carried out as a self-build.

The clients had a large creative input into the project. They envisaged an open plan space with a number of freestanding “houses” to provide intimate spaces to which children could relate, such as a sleep-house, play-house, music-house, storytelling pit etc. These are arranged along a walking route, or street.
