A corten-clad addition to a Victorian end-of-terrace house
The main function of this small Corten clad volume is to allow light to flood the adjoining spaces and reconnect the house with its garden.
Largely hidden by the existing boundary wall, large windows peek over and onto the pavement beyond, bringing sunlight into the new dining space whilst maintaining privacy within from passersbys. Above the dining table large openable rooflights allow passive stack ventilation, and frame views of the sky and trees outside.
Home to a keen chef, the kitchen forms the heart of the rear space with a central cooking area supported above timber flooring folded up to hide cupboards and kitchen equipment, complete with bar seating for the families’ two young daughters. An adjacent miniature wet-room provides a valuable second shower for the growing family.
New windows to the main house, constructed with corten reveals, bring light into the traditional Victorian drawing room, and hint at new interventions. New joinery, lighting and mouldings restore a sense of grandeur to the living spaces which flow out through to the modern extension and garden beyond.
Inspired by the new addition the garden was remodeled to create an outdoor patio for summer dining with access from the street via the oversized matching corten gate.
