Extension and refurbishment of a private residence
Now a family home, the house was the founding site of the Vegetarian Society in the mid-19th century.
The existing house was poorly configured with limited access to the garden. To meet the growing family’s need for space, a two storey rear extension was built using salvaged bricks, blending seamlessly with the fabric of the existing building. The family gained a bedroom, new kitchen, and a glazed dining area.
The addition of modern glazing enhances the light throughout the interior whilst remaining sympathetic to the proportions of the original building. Frameless glazing offers near undisturbed views of the garden and has transformed the family’s use of the home. Boundaries between interior and exterior space are blurred creating a space which has become a natural focal point for people to come together. The garden is an integral part of life in a way that the Vegetarian Society may have envisaged.
