Extensive renovation of existing rectory building with the addition of a single store extension linking the building to the recently renovated coach house in order to adapt to the needs of contemporary family living
The renovation and extension of the Old Rectory at Moor Monkton reinvigorates the existing brick built property to adapt to the needs of contemporary family living, whilst celebrating the character and quality of the original architecture. The differentiation of public and private spaces governs the plan form, with the reinstatement of the arrival courtyard.
A single storey extension replaces a series of out-buildings to provide a formal link between the main house and the coach house. The new-build element carefully reflects the ornate brick and stone detailing with a hand-made red brick and steeply pitched slate roof.
The detailing on the new building responds to the existing detailing without slavishly following it. To the south of the building, the private garden is reinforced with the introduction of a raised terrace. The new kitchen/dining space allows the ground floor space to flow and to interact with the garden.
This interaction is emphasised with the projecting bay window seat which is bathed in morning sunlight. The existing well is retained within the kitchen beneath a glass floor. The upper floors of the rectory are sensitively remodelled to make best use of new roof lights and double height spaces.
