A home office and garage, set within the garden of a Grade II listed cottage, designed for work, play and storage

This home office and garage, set within the garden of a Grade II listed cottage in the Conservation Area of Old Basing, has been designed to combine work and play while providing much needed storage space for a young family.

The design is a simple freestanding building that houses a variety of functions - office, storage space, play area and garage - under one roof. Its structure, inspired by barns and outbuildings found in the local area, complements the existing cottage while providing two distinct spaces: a workplace with storage space and a garage.

The standalone building is made of a lightweight timber frame and is clad with open horizontal timber slats which give the building a simple, uniform appearance. The cladding also covers the roof, concealing gutters to retain the simplicity of form. Minimal detailing combined with unfussy materials helps to further accentuate the quality of the new space.
