Glazed link intervention to join two outbuildings to a cottage within a Grade II listed site to add new living spaces; guest bedroom and study to house
Farningham House Cottage is an 18th Century Grade II listed property in the picturesque Kent village of Farningham, adjoined to a large Georgian house lived in by the client’s parents. The intervention is a glazed passageway linking the cottage with two outbuildings, an existing stables and workshop. All buildings face onto a shared courtyard.
The glazed link allows the outbuildings to form part of the cottage whilst retaining the feeling of three separate buildings and the strong relationship with the courtyard. The link has been designed to be highly sensitive to the historic fabric and the special nature of the courtyard garden in which it is situated, whilst responding to the very specific spatial requirements of the client. Structural glass and minimal fixings allow the glazed link to disappear into the courtyard. The outbuildings have been restored to form guest bedrooms; dining and a kitchen/ living space for entertaining guests.
