Rebuilding and extension to the penthouse flat of a large Victorian House

Existing cellular rooms, a low awkward roof and the accretions of time were to be removed as far as possible in favour of open plan living and to take advantage of the generous views.

Extending the roof into a coherent and exciting space within the constraints of a Grade II Listed Building and the Ladbroke Conservation area was a principal design challenge.

To reach the new top floor level we focused on the design of the new staircase to provide the required physical link while at the same time acting as the new main feature of the renovation. By omitting the usual steel stringers and column supports the glass balustrade itself provides the required structural support. The resulting suspended construction floats in the space and links the open plan upper floor to the rest of the flat. At night the glass of the stair is animated by a computerised dynamic LED lighting programme, with reflection, transparency & colour marking the route through the floors.

The total new refurbishment included the introduction of slimline glazed screens to the terrace for the full width of the west elevation, taking best advantage of views to the communal gardens and sunsets. All new services, bathrooms and kitchen were provided.
