Retrofit of a Grade II listed town hall with the addition of new-build flexible council offices

A transparent, spacious, new double-height entrance area lined by the original brick facade of the town hall on its south side leads to a double-height 'internal street'. This corridor forms a continuous circulation zone along the south side of the new building providing access to two stories of open plan office accommodation that are arranged around two internal courtyards.

The 1930s town hall has been refurnished and together with the new building forms a landscaped courtyard with a terrace opening from the new cafe in the semi-circular space below the town hall’s council chamber.

The building has aquifers with 18m-deep bore holes, rooftop PVs, SuDS and copious insulation, plus secondary glazing in the town hall and achieved a rating of BREEAM Excellent.
