Design and technology building for Oakham School consisting of a mixture of studios and workshops

The design included provision for a CAD/CAM studio, a materials workshop, a technology studio, preparation rooms and an office.

The concept was to create a large 'shed', clad in cedar shingles, that references the vernacular surroundings in a simple well crafted building. Inspiration came from the tradition of barn buildings that can be traced back to Medieval times.

The volume of the building is made up of a pair of two story lean-tos that slide past each other. The building is set a metre away from the existing stone barn and there is mirror-glazed connection between the two. A double height glazed entrance marks the way into a hallway where students can either access the materials workshop or pass upstairs to the IT suites.

At the heart of the scheme is a void, allowing a connection between the design process and the fabrication process. The exposed structural Glulam beams are visible from the ground floor while internal windows ensure all spaces are visually linked.
