Garden Room and internal reorganisation to a house in a rural location
Clients often want a judicious sprinkling of magic architectural dust but aren’t able to put it into words. The client in this case wanted to ‘open up’ a north facing kitchen that tucked into the bank of a west facing slope. They wanted a space that became part of the garden and of the magnificent views westward.
The curvaceous form of the extension is in contrast with the angularity of the existing house emphasising its connecting role between the domestic interior and the landscape within which it is set. Construction is largely timber framing and planked facing.
The design provides them with a shell-like sedum covered roof whose edge is lifted to let in the sun and allow a connection outwards. The space is essentially a new dining area that simply opens out, but also makes a connection with the other main living spaces that didn’t previously work.
