Centre for environmental studies incorporating faculty offices, classrooms, library and auditorium
The aim of Hopkins Architects’ Kroon Hall was to create a sustainable building demonstrating the university's commitment to low-carbon design.
The four-storey pitched roof rectangular volume contains classrooms, a library and study centre, an auditorium and the' Environment Centre'; a flexible space hosting exhibitions and symposia.
Traditional stone was specified for the lower three storeys in reference to the neighboring collegiate buildings, with a contemporary structure of glulam beams forming the upper triple-height spaces. Photovoltaic panels clad the southern face of the roof structure, minimizing the building’s energy requirements.
To the north, the lower storey is buried into the sloping site, allowing level access on the two lower floors, as well as making new connections, knitting together the separate buildings of the faculty.
Fully glazed at both east and west ends, fixed timber louvers provide shading and detail to the facades.
