This house dating from 1980 was in need of updating and remodelling and our client wished to extend at the same time

As part of this process we were keen to explore methods of extending and upgrading standard developer housing as an alternative to rebuilding.

Nearby university buildings and the particular geometry of the house informed the extension's shape, together with considerations for the optimisation of passive solar design. Roof overhangs, heat-reflective blinds and solar control glass are employed to mitigate overheating in summer, while in winter low-angle sun paths reach the heavy masonry former external wall of the house, contributing to diurnal thermal stabilisation.

Additionally, 4kW of PV panels were installed on the roof. Internally the house has undergone extensive alterations to rationalize rooms, move services and storage into the roof space, create more open spaces and make use of the increased light entering from the new elevation.
