Single story rear and side extension to a family home in the Dulwich conservation area
This rear extension to an Edwardian house accommodates an open plan living room and kitchen which establishes a new outlook onto the wide garden to the rear of the property. The ground floor is re-orientated towards the awkwardly-shaped garden, where it is connected by an ample patio accessed by a set of sliding doors.
The house falls within the Dulwich Estate and Southwark Conservation area, where achieving the right balance between the existing and contemporary elements was fundamental in gaining approval.
The extension connects the house with the garage, which was rebuilt to accommodate a side passage, cycle storage and utility room that is separated from the main kitchen by sliding doors. Structural glazing is installed above the in-filled area, with a clerestory to capture southern light. The new extension adds 450 sq ft of space whilst maintaining a subtle appearance from the street, with only a small strip of glazing to indicate any modification.
