Form new kitchen/ dining & living space extending to the rear of an existing 1930s quarter villa in Burnside on the Southside of Glasgow

The clients brief was to form a new kitchen/ dining & living space extending out into the east facing garden to the rear of an existing quarter villa in Burnside on the Southside of Glasgow.

The extension connects with the existing building through a large 3m wide opening in the existing external rear wall. Aligned directly above the opening we inserted a strip of roof glazing which bathes the new kitchen in natural daylight. Lining through with the opening & roof glazing the new bi-fold glazed screen slides back to reveal the garden beyond.

The height of the new living space matches the 2.75m height of the existing dining room before lowering over the sitting area to 2.4m. Two full height windows allow for a view to the garden and back into the rear courtyard. This also provides a connection from the existing bedroom to the garden beyond the extension.
