A purpose built Funeral Directors on a brownfield site in a conservation area, including reception, chapel of rest, preparation area, cold store and hearse garage
The Funeral Directors is formed from two parallel blocks, trimmed to the site boundary and linked across a courtyard that accommodates the turning circle of a hearse.
The front block forms a shop front for the company, with mesh bond brickwork providing privacy screening to street facing glazing. To the rear the more private activities are accommodated. Visitors circulate along a glazed link into a waiting area before entering the Chapel of Rest. The Chapel opens to a private rear courtyard. A second door exits the Chapel of Rest to the working areas of the building, the Preparation room, Coldstore and Hearse Garage.
The outer skin of brickwork gives the building presence on the street whilst providing a protective screen to the surrounding industrial activities, the internal courtyard is softened with a timber structure, that includes a full height sliding timber gate to secure the courtyard when not in use.
