Refurbishment, remodelling and substantial extension of an existing 1970s family home in Kingston-upon-Thames. The brief was to create a modern family home with natural light and a minimal and clean design

SODA. have recently completed the extension and remodelling of this 1970s family house. Situated on a private road in Kingston-upon-Thames, the existing layouts originally featured small, dark rooms with an inefficient use of space.

Our proposals sought to extend the house both to the front and the rear – replacing a lean-to conservatory with a modern kitchen, breakfast and dining room and replacing an existing garage with a bright and spacious family room.

The main aim was to introduce light into the plan: intermediate walls were removed, a feature corner window was introduced to allow light into the study, a large glazed rooflight was positioned above the breakfast area and glazed sliding doors were installed both internally and externally to create a feeling of fluidity and connectivity between spaces.

A rustic handmade brick was chosen to construct both the front and rear extensions to appear at once sympathetic to the existing brick of the original house with crisp, modern detailing chosen to provide a contemporary feel to the design.

Internally, the main entrance hall has been transformed by over-cladding the existing staircase, minimal detailing and finishes continue the modern aesthetic and bespoke joinery provides a sleek solution to the family’s storage needs throughout.
