Grade II listed apartment refurbishment

The project site is based in Notting Hill in London. The brief to Simon Whitehead Architects, was to create more space in a very tightly laid out two bedroom flat.

The building is Grade II listed so there were constraints regarding layout, design and materials in this historic context. The extension in fills an existing space between the outrigger and the building next door – the design plays to this juxtaposition by introducing materials of a contemporary in nature in the powder coated aluminium and as much glazing as possible but with a traditional use and detailing of lead.

The garden was a valuable asset to the flat and so was made accessible from both floors. This required careful detailing to create as light-weight a staircase and enclosure as possible so as not to affect light into the lower levels or the creation of any dark and dingy spaces and resulted in a seamless integration of glazing, cladding, balustrading and stairs.
