Installation for Beam Camp, centred around the process's of construction and based on Gabriel Garcia Marquez's short story 'Light is Like Water'

Navigating Dreams was created as part of the ongoing work of Beam Camp, New Hampshire, which teaches campers aged 7-17 the practical skills of fine and manual arts, technology and collaboration.

The project draws on the reference of Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s short story ‘Light is like Water’. The campers are able to interact with the timber vessel to manipulate the constellations before them in the landscape in order to navigate in a world of light.

The project comprises of a static timber framed ‘boat’ that is used to control a series of suspended ‘constellations’ compromised of individual ‘stars’ created by each of the 88 campers through a series of CNC fabricated ply cam mechanisms. It was constructed on site by campers and staff in 3 weeks in August 2012 and will remain a fixture at beam for the next few years.
