A lightweight single storey extension that acts as a counterpoint to the mass of a Grade II Listed former Gospel Hall

The challenge of the brief was to provide additional sleeping accommodation to a converted and previously extended Grade II listed former Meeting House.

The architectural response is an ephemeral, de materialised structure to contrast with the original building. The timber frame construction is clad with black painted battens and natural cedar counterbattens, with the transition link from the existing building a light frameless glass portal.

The cost-effective, self-build solution utilizes the existing split level ground floor to restrict the visual appearance to the street to that of the timber fence it replaces. The rooflight to the new ensuite bedroom frames a view of the carved angel kneeler stone on the original building’s gable end, acting as a reminder of the spirtual past.
