Refurbishment of a large-scale functionalist apartment for a young family in Prague
The apartment is located in a building designed by Jan Gillar, a Czech Functionalist architect, in 1938. It was originally designed for a couple with a maid, who had a small room adjacent to the kitchen. The rooms have typical functionalist horizontal windows, with a lower sill in the main living room.
The narrow plan, which spans across the apartment block, consists of three large rooms, separated by glazed double doors. The existing kitchen and dining room was moved to the centre of the apartment to make space for a children's bedroom.
The historic parquet floor has been renovated, as well as windows, doors and glazing between the main living spaces. New layers of built-in furniture have been added and composed either in a warm neutral colour, or in natural oak. The concrete beams form a prominent part of the interior, with natural stucco applied to the areas in between.
