Extension and rationalisation of a primary school to provide enlarged dinning and sports facilities
Connected to an existing Victorian school the extension contains a gym hall with a timber sprung floor and lacquered birch plywood wall linings, which can be partitioned into two spaces. A state of the art stage that doubles as a drama studio is connected to the hall, and associated changing facilities are adjacent to it.
The dining room is housed within a glulam timber structure with perimeter overlooking walkways, picture windows and cantilevered projecting music and tutorial rooms.
The orginal school gym hall has been converted into staff accommodation with a mezzanine built over a core of new toilets, IT area, lockers and tea point. An informal seating area is placed in the connected double height volume.
The existing school has been rationalised with all classroom doors and circulation areas upgraded in matching bold colours to the extension.
Landscaping provides the school with a new pedestrian access route, guiding students through the playgrounds to the main entrance that has a large over hanging brick corner feature.
The buildings facades are a combination of brick and glazing. Clipped roof lines and deep brick soffits maintain the simplicity of the building form, while half brick header courses carry the existing school building's horizontal lines through the new development.
