Multi-disciplinary research centre that replaces an existing block with state-of-the-art research facilities in a historically sensitive location
Flexible laboratory spaces are laid out around an open staircase to rationalise circulation act as a focal point. The staircase is lined with timber to provide a more academic feel to the entrance and communal spaces, in contrast to the laboratory function of the rest of the building.
The project aims to blend in with the context of the site by picking up on the fine detailing, colour and texture of the adjoining William and Mary-style Dunn School. Horizontal louvres, that take inspiration from the pattern of the DNA ladder, provide solar shading on the building’s southern facade, different rotations of the louvres cast varied shadows, giving a layered effect to the facade.
The integration of the University’s computing services into basement of the building created the opportunity to minimise carbon by using the heat generated by the data centre to provide power to the laboratory spaces using CCHP technology. The overall building has achieved a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating.
