New outdoor classroom and infant playground for Beckford Primary School

Beckford School is a large Grade II listed community primary school in West Hampstead.

The new playground transforms an existing play area, serving both nursery and reception children, by introducing a wide range of play opportunities within an outdoor learning environment.

Working to a tight budget the scheme, using timber throughout, creates spatial experiences at differing heights and scales. The new play structures encourage children to interpret and make choices, and also combine with simple graphics to form outdoor teaching spaces.

An existing shelter becomes an outdoor, timber-lined classroom with new display boards, graphics and much needed storage. A series of stand alone elements each work with a site condition; a play structure wrapping around a mature tree, a new sinuous play wall with integrated planting creating a boundary, a play-ship reconfiguring existing play equipment and the playhouse, Little Beckford, which echoes the elaborate Dutch gables of the school itself.
