Conversion and refurbishment of Grade II listed building and courtyard from commercial use to a single dwelling
Alison and Nicholas Burwell created a family home from a dilapidated and abused Grade II listed building and its courtyard in the centre of Buckfastleigh, Devon.
The building is arranged with the lounge and dining areas on the upper floor, utilising the high ceilings and tall windows that point towards its original use as an Assembly Room for the adjacent hotel. The ground floor, which had previously been used as a bank, had never been connected to the upper level so a new staircase was required to connect it to the bedrooms, bathrooms and courtyard at ground level.
Working with the existing fabric, new windows and doors are detailed to respect the buildings history whilst lime plaster and render allow the fabric to breath.
The interiors utilise reclaimed billiard table slates and a log of Sweet Chestnut from Dartmoor to marry contemporary and traditional detailing and create a warm and elegant contemporary home.
