View from the Drum to Windermere

This is the first purpose-built jetty in over 70 years, and forms a significant enhancement to the Lake District visitor experience and the facilities at Brockhole
To support the construction of a new floating jetty, a series of land-side structures sit above the Ancient Woodland – keeping its fabric and frail ecology intact, enabling spectacular views across Windermere, access for all, resilience to flooding and the ability (if ever required) to dismantle and take away..
Locating the ticket kiosk (‘The Drum’) was key - strategically it needs to serve as a control point for the operator and for planning it needed to be out of view from the arts and crafts house and its Listed gardens. The circular form was an effective solution.
Kiosk and canopy are Green Oak clad, a lacquered steel roof with a liquid copper underside and lacquered steel uprights. An existing drystone wall has been rebuilt and extends providing a comforting arm around the drum’s shoulder holding it securely in place. The unifying deck is composed of monumental Oak beams, crafted around the retained trees of the Ancient Woodland.
